Chernobyl +25: Fukushima Flies to Russia!

Chernobyl +25: Fukushima Flies to Russia!
Natalya Kaalinina 06.04.2011

In 2011 Russia celebrates mournful anniversary - 25th anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear accident. What lessons did we learn from that technogenic catastrophe? Probably, exam with catastrophe on Fukushima is the best indicator of mastering of old lessons. Whether there is a hope that experts, officials - all who are obliged to makes decisions for safety of the population of the country won't step on the same rake? It is that very case when one can make mistakes and others will pay off for their errors. The same as it was 25 years ago in Chernobyl.

Opening of spring hunting season for waterfowl is on agenda in the end of April. Most mass hunting season of all. Permits on geese-ducks fly away as shawarma in a market day! Thus sellers of hunting services have no necessity for cultivation of fowl in their territory, they bear no expenses - bird - "freebie" arrives from the south, using own wings and nobody have property rights to it. There's also no limit on the quantity of the shot bird, who counts it? You can shoot as many as you can, all is yours - only pay for the permit to the owner of hunting lands!

Everything seems good but not for the hunters of the Far East, Transbaikalia, Eastern Siberia. Lonely voices of the ornithologists sound shyly and randomly warning about danger which can be caused if the bird which has arrived from radioactive areas of wintering in Japan would be shot.

Summer birds come back to Primorsk Territory. According to the ornithologists, rooks arrive first. Then wild ducks come. Many of them fly to Russia from a zone of radiating infection round atomic power station "Fukushima-1" in Japan. Similar situation is with cranes and many other feathery.

Let's note that last week the head of the Krasnoyarsk center of ornithological researches of the Siberian Federal University Alexander Savchenko noted possibility of arriving to Siberia of the ducks bathing in infected water near nuclear station "Fukushima-1".

This misfortune will come to Primorsk Territory much earlier, probably, radioactive birds have already appeared in Vladivostok and other seaside cities. According to experts, nobody carried out serious researches.

As the correspondent of news agency VladNews transfers, it's difficult to estimate degree of danger of the Japanes poultry meat because there's no either sufficient information about "Fukushima", or enough quantity of open researches connected with influence on the environment of other nuclear accidents. However, according to the doctors, in case with wild ducks it's a question of irregular consumption, the quantity of radio nuclides which can be accumulated in organism is not big. So, most likely such delicacy won't put serious harm to your health.

To estimate all danger of delirium about small doses of radiation which is given to us by laymans who happy-go-lucky got to the post of officials responsible for our safety, I will quote some eloquent quotations from the book which become desktop for radio ecologists of the whole world - Deadly Deceit, Low-Level Radiation, High-Level Coverup by Dr. Jay Gould and Benjamin A. Goldman with Kate Millpointer, published by Four Walls Eight Windows, New York, 1991.

"One and the same doses can be more poisonous for a thyroid gland of children and embryos, than for thyroid gland of adults, increasing risk of abortions, births of children with low weight and children's death rate. Moreover, very small doses can harmfully influence development of the extremely necessary hormones of growth, breaking physical and mental health of survived children.

Peculiarity of influence of small doses of radiation is that its consequences come to light through certain period of time. Getting to organism with food, water and air, products of radioactive disintegration do the greatest harm to the immune system, one of which main functions is antineoplastic protection.

Long influence of small doses of radiation leads to development of secondary immunodeficiency against which many diseases appear. Being strong mutagen, small doses of radiation are capable to cause somatic mutations, changing functional properties of organs and systems, in particular, of nervous system and also genetic mutations which are manifestative in change of hereditary properties of organism as well as in hereditary diseases".

Advancing objections of opponents like "well, in fact we are already living in conditions of space radiation and are still alive", I will refer already on our, domestic authority, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexey Yablokov: "Set of all data shows that every, additional to natural irradiation can make negative impact on a live being and person". Thus, if really there is potential threat of reception of additional to natural irradiation, official shouldn't argue, he is obliged to take all preventive measures.

Spring fowling in the territory of the Far East, Transbaikalia, Eastern Siberia during season of 2011 shouldn't be opened! At the time when Rospotrebnadzor closes import of the goods from Japan irrespective of radio-activity indications as preventive measures, it's a crime to open the fowling which essence is the same as "to play roulette" - no one could say whence this very trophy ahs come, consequences will be seen later but it will be already impossible to change anything and too late to search for the guilty.
